I’ve got to start off with, I know I’m not the most fashionable guy, but G/FORE who support The Bogey Men are one of the coolest golf clothing companies around and they sent us out a couple of visors to wear this season and it got me thinking, why do some people love and others hate the visor?

Growing up I saw plenty of visors on tv. Seve, Sam Torrance, Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Monty, Bubba, Louis Oosthuizen, Robert Rock, Darren Clarke at different points in their careers wore a visor, so did Sergio and of course there was Poulter and Phil, both big visor guys. But then the visor kind of disappeared from the men’s game, while it remains the most popular headwear on the LPGA Tour, because of ponytails and stuff.
I've never been a "visor guy" most of the time I don't even like wearing a regular cap. I think I have a small head and most hats just make me look like a fool, particularly flat caps anything with a large brim really does not suit me. So why would I give a visor a go this year? Well honestly it started out as a forfeit between myself and Michael, we have plans for a video where the loser of a match will have to wear a golf outfit created by the winner and the visor was a big part of that for both of us. Then as time went by I started to just get curious, and I don't usually take myself too seriously so what's the worst that can happen? I look like an idiot online? If you've seen me chipping in some of our videos you know I have no problem looking like a fool on a golf course, so why not try it out?
The visor has had a bit of a renaissance recently and the guys who wear them are undeniably cool and fashionable, particularly on the PGA Tour. The 3 guys week in, week out who you’ll see wearing a visor these days are Luke Donald, Keith Mitchell and Jason Day, anyone who says these guys are not fashionable or cool are just flat out wrong. Luke Donald interestingly is also the last visor-wearing World number 1.
Even fewer guys on the DP World Tour wear a visor, from my research only Todd Clements, Marcel Siem occasionally and Kiradech Aphibarnrat wear visors.
I get that if you're bald, the visor gives no sun protection but the most common criticism I’ve heard is that you may not have the correct head shape for a golf visor. It’s not your fault! Golf visors look great on some golfers, but terrible on others. The visor may not be the best golf hat for you.
As we’ve seen a number of “cool/urban/grungy” golf fashion brands have emerged over the last couple of years, will we see a new visor movement?
I'm going to try it out this year and see what life with a visor is like, the pros and cons, then I'll report back on what I made of it, but also what my friends and golf partners made of the visor too. We could find out very quickly that the visor does not suit me and this experiment could be over before it begins. Initial feedback from my wife is not good... Do I expect to suddenly look like Jason Day when I start wearing a visor? Of course not, it would be nice though!
